After all, they\u2019d just gotten a cushy tax refund, and Jorge had earned a raise at work.<\/p>\n<p>Jorge is a general manager for a real estate company and Crystal is a stay-at-home mom of a 1.5-year-old and 2-month-old, with a third baby on the way. The couple wanted parking, on-site laundry and more square footage. Their goal was to be within driving distance of both his work in New York City and their church in New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>Early into their homebuying journey, the couple got an intriguing offer: Did they want to be on TV? Jorge\u2019s stepbrother\u2019s girlfriend had a connection to a spin-off of the beloved \u201cThis Old House\u201d show, titled \u201cThis First House\u201d, which aired on April 27, 2026, on Roku. Show hosts Camille and Zack Dettmore would walk young couples through buying and fixing up a home, while footing the bill for the renovations.<\/p>\n<p>Jorge had grown up watching \u201cThis Old House,\u201d and after talking to the casting director, the couple agreed. But with no house, there\u2019d be no show. They hurried to find a condo before production began.<\/p>\n<p>The Javiers\u2019 real estate agent referred them to a mortgage lender. But to their chagrin, the lender denied their application. The couple had too much debt and not enough income, pushing their debt-to-income ratio too high for the lender.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first of many hurdles the couple faced while trying to buy a house on a small budget.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"financing\" data-position=\"1\" data-beam-element-viewed=\"\" data-id=\"br-h2-1-onpage-placement\" data-type=\"h2\" data-location=\"Editorial\" data-name=\"h2_all\" data-text=\"Financing a house before the show\u2019s taping was no small feat\" data-outcome=\"\">Financing a house before the show\u2019s taping was no small feat<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 26%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>It took the Javiers six more months, two more lenders and several failed offers before they found a house. As it goes for many homebuyers, the borrowing process was a hassle.<\/p>\n<p>After being denied for the first mortgage, they applied for a $350,000 Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loan with less strict requirements and were approved, along with a down payment assistance grant from the state of New Jersey. The housing search was on.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>But FHA loans have stricter property requirements, including being \u201cmove-in ready.\u201d Coupled with the couple\u2019s preapproval amount, inventory was limited. It\u2019s not an uncommon experience \u2014 a December 2025 Bankrate analysis found median American earners are priced out of 75% of the housing market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter we started searching within our budget, we realized there wasn\u2019t much,\u201d Jorge says.<\/p>\n<p>Still, they toured available houses and made offers. Most of the time, they felt their offer wasn\u2019t seriously considered. Other homebuyers were offering cash or as much as $30,000 over the listing price. Sellers are also wary of accepting FHA loans for their strict inspections, smaller down payments and longer closing times. \u201cWe had to expand our search and loosen our expectations,\u201d Crystal says.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, one offer was accepted, but then the couple was ghosted by the seller. Their real estate agent recommended they switch lenders to try to save the deal, so they transferred the files and were approved by a third, conventional lender. Jorge\u2019s parents also threw them a lifeline \u2014 almost $30,000, to be exact \u2014 to make the purchase possible. \u201cI did not even know that my parents could lend me that amount of money,\u201d he admits. \u201cIt was a shock to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deal still didn\u2019t go through. \u201cI guess they didn\u2019t think we could seriously afford it,\u201d Crystal says. It wasn\u2019t as close to the city as they\u2019d hoped, and it wasn\u2019t a single-family home with a yard, driveway or in-unit laundry. But it did have a $275,000 list price, which allowed them to make an offer $25,000 over asking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The couple had to compromise on a few of their original conditions. \u201cThe alternative was renting another place that was bigger and just throwing money down the drain,\u201d Jorge says.<\/p>\n<p>After their offer was accepted, they purchased the condo with a 7.25% mortgage rate.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"renovate\" data-position=\"3\" data-beam-element-viewed=\"\" data-id=\"br-h2-3-onpage-placement\" data-type=\"h2\" data-location=\"Editorial\" data-name=\"h2_all\" data-text=\"\u201cThis First House\u201d hosts helped the couple renovate\" data-outcome=\"\">\u201cThis First House\u201d hosts helped the couple renovate<\/h2>\n<p>Now with the keys to their new house, the Javiers were ready for taping. Camille and Zack Dettmore, who run a home improvement company, helped them paint, renovate the kitchen and floors, install new lighting and appliances and purchase furniture for the premier season of \u201cThis First House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey collaborated well with each other,\u201d Camille says.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Zack says you\u2019re not going to watch the show and think the couple had an easy time. \u201cIt\u2019s difficult for most people who are not affluent,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt\u2019s about managing your expectations and finding out what\u2019s actually essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"align wp-block-media-credit\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/didebta.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/TFH_11122025VC_0244_RT2-scaled.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"Crystal Javier and Camille Dettmore.\"  \/><figcaption class=\"story__caption-wrapper\">\n            <span class=\"copyright\">Crystal Javier and Camille Dettmore in Crystal&#8217;s new kitchen.<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"homebuying-team\" data-position=\"4\" data-beam-element-viewed=\"\" data-id=\"br-h2-4-onpage-placement\" data-type=\"h2\" data-location=\"Editorial\" data-name=\"h2_all\" data-text=\"Choosing a homebuying team was a \u201cvery intimate process\u201d\" data-outcome=\"\">Choosing a homebuying team was a \u201cvery intimate process\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>The Javiers say the team you pick to help with homebuying matters \u2014 like choosing a mortgage lender and finding a real estate agent. \u201cIt\u2019s a very intimate process, buying a home,\u201d Jorge explains. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of like marriage counseling.\u201d He continues that your team should have your best interests at heart but also be willing to steer you in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>As first-time homebuyers on a tight budget, they didn\u2019t always feel their team understood their needs until meeting the \u201cThis First House\u201d crew. \u201cIt feels like you\u2019re not being taken as seriously because your budget is so small,\u201d Crystal says. \u201cThey have so much experience and we don\u2019t know what we\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 28%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>With young kids themselves, the Dettmores made the Javiers feel understood during the renovation. Both sets of parents know a house should be as practical and easy to clean as it is beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>After moving in eight months ago, they feel at home. Jorge says he loves coming home to his family after work every night. And as homeowners, they value the freedom to sell or leave the home to their children one day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re building equity, and our money is not just going to somebody else,\u201d Crystal says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/didebta.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/inset-2-680x1024.png\" alt=\"The Javier kids play in their new home.\" class=\"wp-image-1170079 size-full\"  \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>It also feels like they have a stake in the community.
